Dr. Kanagavel is a Senior Consultant General Surgeon with nearly 18 years of experience. He presently serves as Director, Gastropro, Post graduate faculty and Senior Consultant in General, Gastrointestinal and Minimal Access Surgery at St Isabel Hospital, Chennai. He has special interest in foregut surgery, complex corrosive stricture reconstruction, endoscopy and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is currently a PhD research scholar working on Minimal Access Esophagectomy in Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai.

His unique initiative of Weekly National Postgraduate Clinics in General Surgery is one of the most followed one with more than 10300 active subscribers and 3.2 lakh views. These clinics are mentored by eminent national surgical faculties and postgraduate residents. He was the organising secretary for the TNASICON 2021 at Chennai. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Surgery, Joint Convenor of the Fellowship of the Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of India, Member of the Academic Council, Association of Surgeons of India, Tamilnadu Chapter and Chairman of the Association of Surgeons of India, Chennai City Branch. He is the National EC member of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons. He was part of the Intersociety (IAGES, AMASI and SELSI) practice guidelines committee for the laparoscopy during COVID pandemic. He is the convenor for the IAGES Primetime – the flagship international fortnightly program of the IAGES showcasing the best of the talents from across the globe for the welfare of the surgical fraternity. He serves as the sectional editor of Upper GI in the Journal of Minimal Access Surgery. He was instrumental in organizing the first ever cadaver endoscopy training program of the IAGES in India. He original work on the influence of TP53 in esophageal carcinogenesis was recognized with Sundaram Award of the TNASI in the year 2003. He has been awarded 14 research grants which include international travelling fellowships by the Japan Surgical Society, Japanese Association of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Surgery and International Society for Gastrointestinal Oncology. He has nine named orations to his credit. He has 24 original indexed journal publications.
